Mr. Galina was a great principal and and even better human being. He took a chance on a kid transferring from special education to regular education. He told my mom i was going to get three months. She whittled it down to three weeks. I graduated from PS 109 in 1989. I went on to high school and college. I'm in graduate school pursuing a masters in Sport Business Management. Somehow Mr. Galina would've smiled at that. He was into sports.
Thank You Mr. Galina,
It is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to Mr. Marvin Galina. He was a Principal, a father figure, a mentor, and much more to the students and staff of P.S. 109.
My experiences of Mr. Galina were from the perspective of student (from K-9th grade) and later, a volunteer.
There are many things that I will never forget about Mr. Galina:
How he respected older adults by traditionally inviting alumni who attended PS 109 in the early 1900's to our school assemblies.
How he respected cultural diversity, welcomed parent participation, and provided his students with many educational opportunities (i.e. science fair, photography, music, etc.)
and of course,,,
How much he resembled Kenny Rodgers (smile)
My comfort is that I was able to share with him some of my successes including
graduating from an Ivy League university.
I regret that I will not be able to share with him that I will earn my doctorate in 2018 nor any of my future endeavors.
May Mr. Galina rest in peace knowing he will always be fondly remembered and loved.
